Getting Started Unpacking
Your box contains
- Mac mini
- a power adapter
- power cable
- an Apple Remote
- a DVI to VGA adapter
Basic features
In the front of your Mac Mini is a slot-loading optical drive. The built-in infrared (IR) is to the right of the slot and the power indicator light is located in the lower right corner hand.
In the back of the Mac mini has two rows of features. Along the top row, from left to right are
- the power button
- one slot for a security cable and lock
- audio in the optical digital audio in port
- one headphone out / optical digital audio output port
Along the bottom row, from left to right are
- a power port
- an Ethernet port (10/100/1000Base-T)
- one FireWire 400 port
- a port DVI video output
- four USB 2.0 ports
AirPort Extreme wireless technology and Bluetooth ® wireless technology are within your Mac mini.
Power adapter
Strip away the plastic film on your Mac mini and power adapter. Place the Mac mini in a company right side surface upwards or sideways, and near an electrical outlet. Your monitor, keyboard and mouse should also be near at hand.
- Connect the power cord to power adapter
- Put the cap on the end of the power adapter € ™ s lead in the Mac Herminia € ™ s power port
- Plug the cord into the electrical outlet
Warning: do not put anything on your Mac mini. Objects on your Mac mini can disrupt optical drive, AirPort Extreme wireless signal, and Bluetooth ® wireless signal.
Peripherals set-up
The Mac mini is BYODKM â € "bring your own display, keyboard and mouse. Use your existing (almost all are suitable).
Keyboard and mouse
Connect the keyboard to a USB port on the back of the Mac mini. Plug the mouse into a USB port on the keyboard or the Mac mini.
Windows-based keyboards can not be specific to Mac OS X Command and Option keys. The Windows key, however, is equivalent Command key for Mac OS X, and the Alt key is equivalent to Mac OS X option.
To modify the keyboard
- click Apple> System Preferences
- click Keyboard & Mouse
- choose Modifier keys
- follow the instructions on the screen
Please Note: When using a USB keyboard and mouse made by a company other than Apple, may have software drivers. If you donâ ™ € t already have these, please visit the Manufacturing ™ € s website and download them.
Apple Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Mighty Mouse
If you have an Apple Wireless Keyboard and wireless Mighty Mouse, follow the setup procedures contained in the appropriate manual.
Monitor
Using Mac Herminia € ™ s output port DVI to connect a video monitor. If you have a VGA monitor, connect a Mac mini with the supplied DVI to VGA.
Please note; Mac mini is compatible with digital resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 pixels. This means you can connect a 20 inch Apple Cinema Display or 23-inch Apple Cinema HD Display.
Internet or network
Connect your Mac mini to the Internet or a wireless network or through a cable.
- Wireless. Mac mini features AirPort Extreme wireless technology. To more details, go to the menu bar, choose Help> Mac Help, and click Library> AirPort Help.
- Cable. Simply plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the Mac mini, and the other to a cable modem, DSL modem or network.
Switching the power button
To start the Mac mini, press the power button in the back.
Configuration Wizard
The first time you use the Mac mini, the Assistant Setup appears. This allows you to establish your
- user account
- Internet access
- Email details
If already have a Mac, you can use Setup Assistant to transfer software and files to your Mac mini.
If you prefer to wait before the transfer of information, use the Migration Assistant at a later date.
- Select the applications folder
- Utilities Open
- Double-click wizard Migration
Personalization
To change the desktop design â € "the first screen that appears when youâ € ™ ve finished with the Setup Assistant – Go to the menu bar and select Apple> System Preferences. For details on what you can do to customize your Mac mini, choose Mac Help and search for â € œSystem preferencesâ €.
Sleep mode and Sleep mode closure
If you are going to be away from your Mac mini for only a short time, you can put it in standby mode instead of shutting down. Simply choose one of the following:
- hold your Apple Remoteâ € ™ s Play / Pause button for three seconds
- Choose Apple> System Preferences, choose Energy Saver, set the timer
- press the power button
- choose Apple> Sleep from the menu bar
When youâ € ™ re ready to reactivate Mac mini, Apple press any Remoteâ € ™ s buttons or any key on the keyboard.
Shut down
Turn off the Mac mini, choose Apple> Shut Down. To activate it again, press the power button.
Please Note: Do not move the Mac mini before youâ € ™ I turn it off. You can damage the hard drive if you move the computer while the disc is spinning.
Basic OS X operating system guide
Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard Mac are Herminia € ™ s operating system. Run the file, the software and peripheral devices, and is similar in principle to Windows.
Controls
Your controls are the mouse, keyboard and the Apple Remote. If youâ ™ € become more accustomed to Windows, youâ € ™ ll soon discover that Mac OS X is easier to navigate and faster.
Key Features
Browse for your Mac screens Herminia € ™ s easy. There are self-explanatory windows, menus and shortcuts, plus the following features:

Desktop
Desktop is the screen where you normally start each time you turn the Mac mini. The display shows your HD (hard drive) icons. Select an icon to view HD files and applications it contains. When connecting a peripheral device on the Mac mini, the icon appears on the desktop.
Points to note:
- Desktops Use to save your files, images, files and other documents
- Mac OS X gives each user on your Mac mini one independent desktop
- Desktop behind any of the applications that run
Dock
The icons at the bottom of the screen is the Dock. Use the icons to access their most frequently used applications, folders, files and windows.

- Red closes the window
- Yellow minimizes the window to the Dock

Search
The Dock icon at the far left is the Finder. You can use the browser to manage your folders, drives and applications.
Menu Bar
Mac OS X only has a menu bar. Appears on the screen as a line on the top.

- put the Mac mini in sleep mode

The menu bar changes to give the most appropriate options for software youâ € ™ re running.
Connectivity

The FireWire 400 is ideal for connecting high speed devices. These include digital video cameras and hard drives.
The four USB 2.0 ports for devices such as keyboard, mouse, iPod, printer, camera, games and controller. The Mac mini will recognize many of them without the need to implement software, because Apple pre-installs hundreds of peripheral drivers on your factory to make connections quick and easy as possible.
Use your audio in / optical digital audio in port for a microphone. Use the headphone output and optical digital audio output port of a pair of headphones or speakers. You can also use any port for digital audio equipment, as appropriate.
